Default ADVICE ON BARIENT SELF TAILING 24

I am sailing an X 372 Sport in the waters around Bombay India.

We regularly grease the Barient winches but unfortunately during the last service, a few bolts were rusted in their own thread.

Result: the bolts broke. Some part of the bolt now appears to be stuck inside the thread.

It concerns the springloaded bolt which makes the self-tailing plates work.

Although we can still use the winch, the self-tailing function is not 100% due to the two missing bolts.

The make is Barient and size is 24

My question is whether this can be fixed as I believe that part of the bolt is still inside the winch.

If I drill out the bolt, but then I dont know whether I can put back a new bolt since drilling will make the thread useless).

Hope you can give me some advice.

Hi, Chetan

it is fairly easy to remove broken bolts with the right tools and experience .

assuming You don't have a drill press . I would suggest You take the part to a machine shop and asked them if they have experience of drilling stainless steel if the answer is yes they will have to grind surface of the bolt Smoot and then center punch and followed with center drilling and then drilling with a smaller drill bit . if they don't have extraction tool they should be able to make one from a old tap after that You should be able to use the same sized bolts as before

to give You an idea those two bolts will cost You about $35 to remove in USA

if You need more specific information , please let me know .

if You are going to do the above . please take it into a shop before You try , because without the right tools . if the surface gets hardened or off-center, job will be more difficult.

Good luck .

thanks muzaffer... many others have suggested exactly the same procedure

unfortunately i am not sure we have that kind of expertise readily available in india

at any rate i am not terribly excited about risking the entire winch drum at the hands of an unskilled machinist

i have found a website www.arco-winches.com in australia who will supply me a new drum and spring bolts

a more expensive option, but safer, don't you think?

once again, thanks for your help

Good morning Chetan,

I made a mistake and post your previous message again[B )] .

you are probably right about ordering new parts but it might be worthwhile to try a company that I found on the Internet , which appears to have the expertise or may know someone who does .

www.webindia.com/cnc/cnc.html .

there's a contact telephone number and name of the person on their web site I hope this will be helpful

fair winds .
