I have two related questions. The first one is already asked in the forum, but no answer so far:

Which software can be used to read a DNC map?

The other is related. Here is the map of central med

I am boldly referencing it in Balaton cruising guide, as it is supposed to cover that area. Could anyone with a DNC reader confirm whether it actually does?

Answering to myself...

Partial answer to question #1:

gdal is an open source package, which should be able to convert DNC charts to a multitude of other formats, according to this post: http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/ticket/2112

I could not reproduce it however.

Answer to question #2:

I have realized that the link is to a map library, which contains some maps of the ara, but does not cover all. Balaton is not here. So I deleted the reference from the wiki page.

Answering for you #1 - There are none.

see: Finally, the link I have been looking for:

http://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/m...ffENC_DNC.html

Also search DNC Chart for long thread on this topic.

Sorry for the news, but I have been in search of a DNC chart reader for years

There is a converter, though it is not very high quality yet: gdal with the ogdi driver is indeed capable to convert

DNC maps to a multitude of other formats. I can confirm that it is able to recognize DNC.

Unfortunately it often chokes on some data elements, but getting it to production quality is just a matter of reporting (or fixing) the bugs.
