That is an excellent point. While it has not happened to me, I know someone who had their credit card declined while traveling abroad, even though they had not reached their limit nor were they past due. The CC company had seen what was considered an excess amount of unusual activity and put their card on hold. It just took a phone call to get it straightened out, but would have made life easier if they had done that up front.

When we began cruising, our credit card company freaked out a bit and we had to call them from various exotic central american ports to calm them down, but now they are used to it and we don't have too many blocked charges anymore. Once we tried to call ahead and let them know, but they said the customer service branch could not directly advise the loss control system and if we were blocked, we'd just have to call in after the fact. Seemed odd, but it has really not been that much of an issue. I think we were blocked about three times in the last 8 years of travel, mostly in the first two years - each time upon using the card in a new country where we'd not previously traveled - and each time easily addressed with a two minute phone call.
