Barens Seatrader Query

Hi All

I am looking at a 20year old steel Barens Seatrader sloop. Can anyone comment on the design for use as an ocean crusier? (I see that the Cruiserlog founders have a Barens, so perhaps there may be some interest??! ) The boat was laid up in Durban of 8mm mild steel below the waterline with a mahogany cabin/decks.

A great boat/design, and if H/D&B were built by Barens himself, then built by a Dutch master.

Great for cruising - not the fastest boat around (very beamy) but once she gathers up speed she keeps going.

What size are you looking at? (44' Barens Seatrader)

Apparently she was so that's good! The current (2nd) owner has had her for 14 years and bought her from the (1st) commissioning owner. When the current owner was last in Durban many years back Barens came aboard and had a chat. He had indicated that the original owner was in the 79 Fastnet race so had commissioned him to build something safe!

My question then is reframed slightly- at 20 years old will she still be?

She is 40ft long and very similar in layout to the 44' ketch- a bit quirky down below but I like that!

That would depend on how the vessel was maintained. At 20 years old a good surveyor is a must - interior corrosion is most important to look for.

She would have been built in the Barens shipyard by a steel master who would have been very fussy about the interior coatings but, how well did previous owners treat her? - the surveyor will see.
