Default Beds, bunks and berths.

Every now and again it becomes necessary to change one's mattresses. I always spend time considering the next generation of bed and usually end up merely replacing what is already there.

What is there is a compromise and not nearly as comfortable as the sleepmaster gem Mk1 installed in the standard home bedroom. I can't use innersprings because of the odd shape of the boat's berths. So, I usually end up making a composite with two separate densities of foam, topped with a 2" thickness of memory foam.

All this has traditionally sat on a matrix which looks like an industrial polishing pad.

Are there any advancements in boat beds which would be more effective, without being too much more expensive, that I haven't been made aware of?

Indeed, is anyone using an alternate system which you think may be more comfortable than the system I traditionally use?

We have 2" of firm latex with 2" of medium latex (glued together as mattress) and a mattress topper (also latex foam) of 1.5" thickness (less firm than medium) and we like it. Latex has the benefit of being able to be drenched in saltwater and still be able to be clean it with freshwater, dry it and have it be perfectly good (ask how I know...). Memory foam, not so good. And-of course other foams that aren't closed cell don't work so well either.

I had forgotten about latex. When I was a child, latex mattresses and pillows were what the poor people used. Now they are top end. I will look for such a product. Thanks Brenda.
