Default best place for a refit

Where is the best/cheapest place in north or central america for a yacht refit?

Mexico? Carribean/Central america or USA? We may have to replace Rigging and refit for offshore voyage.

Any advice/experience?

Cheers

I'm no expert, but when we replaced our rigging we were in Venezuela, and we had to bring all the parts from the US. We did the work ourselves, so we didn't need experienced riggers. If we had, we'd have gone back to the US. I think you'll find that all marine gear in the Western hemisphere is made in Europe or the US, so you are better off buying it in the US - and then you're better off doing the work there where there are people who know what they're doing. There are a few island in the Caribbean where you can find experienced people (St. Martin and the USVI are probably the best bets).

My opinion. Hope some others weigh in on this.

Kiwi,

Trinidad has all the workshops and suppliers you can imagine.

Though not as cheap as it used to be, it's still lots better then Europe or the States.

Hi Jan,

Where in Trinidad would you suggest? I have to refit a cat in the Caribbean, including the rigging and the electronics. IŽll be doing a lot of the work myself, but I will need to bring in parts, and will need help with the rig...

Chaguaramas is where most of the places in Trinidad are, but somebody else will have to give you names, it's been so long and things have changed a lot since we were last there. It's big business now. Check out Budget Marine on line, you might find that most of the stuff you need can be gotten through them and you won't have to hassle importing stuff. http://www.budgetmarine.com/

There's been a lot of discussion about the current spate of robberies and other criminal behavior in Trinidad. To some extent, it's the price of popularity with a transient group (tourists, cruisers). And it's been said before. The last paragraph of an old log of ours comments on this - both Trinidad and Venezuela and safety. http://www.cruiser.co.za/hostmelon3.asp
