Best time to Trans Pac?

I'm taking a little informal poll-we're trying to figure out the best time to sail from San Diego/Newport Beach to Hawaii. I know the Trans Pac race just finished-and I've heard mixed opinions of "Leave by New Years" to "Gotta go June/July"...

So, now I pose the question to y'all-WHEN is the best time to leave So. California for Hawaii?

We started to leave California (Sausalito) on June 28th, but had to

come back due to "crew problems". We left a second time, from

Monterey, on July 10th. At a stately 7.8 knots, we arrived in Hilo

on July 21. The first couple days we had wind and seas off of the

starboard bow, but after that it was literaly "fair winds and

following seas" the rest of the way. We basically just set course

along the great circle route (240 degrees True) all the way.

So, while this might not be the best time to go, it was certainly a

good time for us to go. Your mileage may vary!
