Anybody experienced spontaneous starting of a bow thruster electric motor and heating up to (almost) cause fire onboard?

Equipment: QL BP900 bow thruster with touch panel control mounted on the deck. Equipment factory installed (Elan) in a sailing boat less than 1 year old.

Moisture or water entry to control panel is suggested as possible cause.

Should such an incident be covered by manufacturer's guarantee (either equipment or boat manufacturer)?

Welcome aboard.

I take it that you would first have had a look at your warranty and contacted the factory? Next, check the wiring for deterioration at contact points and check supply voltage at the bowthruster. Spontaneous starting could also be caused by a faulty component (diode or such) on the electronic board in the deck panel.

IMHO I would suggest you call in a QUALIFIED electrician (not just your friend who "knows a little") as this could cause a fire.
