Default Fibreglass Diesel Tank

Hello, our boat is was built in the mid 80's and has a fibreglass fuel tank, we moved onto it about 12months ago. Recently whilst changing the primary fuel filter I noticed a thick gel like substance in the filter. I am wondering if the diesel is breaking down the fibreglass fuel tank, is there anyone else with fibreglass tanks?

Regards

Greeny

Not now but had them before. IMHO diesel fuel should not break down properly structured GRP.

I'd suggest it is more likely to be bio mould.

Cheers

I would agree with Swagman on that - is the gel a thick brownish to clear goo? Was the boat sitting for a while with a partially filled tank? Both a great way to grow tank sludge...

I agree. I have an Endurance 37, built 1984, with 2 x 220 litre fibreglass tanks and have had no problem with them at all. I do however, make a point of occasionally draining and cleaning the tanks. Sounds like bio sludge to me.

Cheers

Hello Paul,

It won't be the glass breaking down now. It it was a badly made fuel tank it would have showed up years ago. I have to go with the others and say it sounds like you got a dose of the bio mould. sorry mate! Me thinks you got to drain the fuel system and replace the filters and flush the lines out. Give it a double dose of the ANTIDOTE to be sure it's well treated.

Regards

Peter
