Interesting concept - overlaying nav charts on GoogleEarth.

Anyone seen/tried it?

Wow! That has the potential to be the greatest single advance in navigation since Columbus was a lad. 680 charts for $50, overlaid and zoomable on seamless satellite photos, free and constant chart updates from Notices to Mariners. I wonder how long before the whole globe is covered.

This appears to be amazing!

I just helped friends sail from the Marshall Islands to Fiji via Tarawa, Kiribati and Funafuti, Tuvalu. The skipper is totally convinced that the overlays with Ozzie Explorer are the way to go - and proceeded to enter Tarawa on the incorrect side of the outer buoy, narrowly avoided a shoal that did NOT appear on the photo in Funafuti Atoll, and nearly ran aground in Fiji! Even with the lat/long added to the photos he was still several feet from the correct position on the overlays - they are just too difficult to adequately interpret - especially in narrow areas where a few feet means the difference from sailing and grounding. And the photos do not show all the dangers - especially the reefs and shallows with blue or green coral growing upon them. The only time I found it valuable was late in the afternoon entering a pass in north Viti Levu, Fiji and we were able to determine we were actually in the pass but couldn't see the dangers in the pass on the photo - that still required a keen eye and polarized lenses. For me - give me a gps, a decent paper chart, and either C-map or a similar system as a back up, a working radar and sunlight - I might be old fashioned but skippered my vessel for 12 years, 5 of them in uncharted South Seas atolls, and managed to remain in the water and not on the reef.

In preparing a topic in Cruiser Log to discuss marinas and anchorages in S.E. Asia - we used Google earth to provide images of these - however, in doing so we have found that many images are old and do not reflect changes made subsequent to the original acquisition.

A good example is the image provide by Google Earth of the geographic coordinates of where

the Marina " 1 degree 15 Marina " has been established for at least a year.

Check this web site for description of the Marinas location etc :-

http://sg.pagenation.com/sin/One%20Degree%...8399_1.2451.map

Then compare this current Image taken of the exact same location by Google Earth. :-

On Googles image there is no marina - and if there were it would be on land.

Singapore has reclaimed land to the extent that very few electronic charts have been annotated to show the geographical changes and the same applies to Paper charts.

Therefore, it is hoped that this new navigational aid is all that is being hyped.

Karmaladen's post provides a serious caveat.

My understanding is that only the Google Earth data, and NOAA charts which cover the USA are being claimed as accurate enough for use as an overlay navigation aid at this stage.
