Default Great Harbours

Whitby - NE coast of England - North Yorkshire. Birthplace of Captain James Cook and the home port of the Endeavour (Whitby coal collier), the first ship to discover Australia.

In the photo the ruin abbey - destroyed by Viking raiders in the 8th century was the inspiration for E. Roker - Count Dracula - its a very spooky place. Behind the Abbey is the new church buit 13Century, dedicated to the old whalers - built like a sailiing ship inside with the pulpit - a ships bows. Was the inspiration for the chapel scene in Greg Pecks film Moby Dick - was the chapel where Father Wapple (Orson Welles) gave his sermon to the whalermen.

Today some of the old herring smoke houses still exist, selling the best kippers in the world

Wow. THAT is a great harbor. I wonder how many of our members have info about other great harbors?
