Hi everyone,

Well it happened...we were hit by lightning two nights ago here in Mazatlan and are now going through the long process of identifying what exactly was damaged by the hit. It seems that the damage is pretty much limited to electronics (radar, 2 autopilots, battery chargers, chartplotter, VHF, windex, knot meter, anchor/strobe light and no power to mast cable). Most of the electronics where old but at least 1 of the autopilots was a expensive unit and we are hoping we will be able to repair it.

We have just obtained a new insurance policy back in March with Pantaenius and it states there is no deductible for lightning strikes so everything would be covered. My concern is that if we were to put in a claim for what may amount to less than 5K would we be risking cancellation or non-renewal of policy? Does anyone have any insight on either Pantaenius handling of claims (mostly after the fact) or information that may be helpful if we decide to put a claim in for damage.

Any information or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Jackie

I'm sorry to hear that. It's scary, isn't it? And the damage isn't so obvious right away, as we found when we were hit by lightning.

I was told that because lightning strikes are an "act of God" that the insurance pays but there are no consequences to the insured. Not like when you're in a boat accident and damage to your boat and possibly others is incurred - accidents stay on your insurance record for a number of years (not sure, but I believe it's about 5 years), and your rates can and often will, increase. Your insurance agent should be able to inform and reassure you on this.
