Default Hull Flex

I have a 41' Islander that is old and has been raced pretty hard. We have sailed her for 4 years and a friend is saying that it is time to sell it. one of his reasons is that the hull flexes to much. she has a big rig and sails wonderfully. with the wind on the beam the standing rigging is quite lose. it will move maybe three to four inches but will be tight at rest. we have noticed some lines in the gel coat just below the chain plates.

the boat also was grounded hard at one time and a small piece of the keel was taken off. a 4 inch crack has developed at the aft end of the keel port to starboard. it is in an extension of the keel that runs back to the rudder. we had it fixed once by a marina but i don't think they did a very professional job. it came back at launch time when she was in the slings. i plan on putting her in the slings this spring and fixing the crack myself.

I have thought of having a survey done and see what they tell me but the last one we had the guy missed so much. it was stuff i was replacing anyway but it is hard to know if they have seen bad hulls before and can tell the difference.

We love this boat it has tons of room. we are at the point of putting alot of equipment, time and money into this boat so that we can follow the dream. we don't want to expend our resources if the boat won't be safe.

we have been in 35 knot winds and she did fine.

any ideas, knowledge or opinions would be great.

Thanks

Gelcoat cracks are quite common - but the crack aft of the keel sounds serious. If I were in your deckshoes, I'd do a websearch and click on either the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors and / or the National Association of Marine Surveyors to find a professional in your area. Tell him / her your concerns and be honest with what you know about the vessel's history. Then - get a second opinion from another professional. It will be money well spent, put your mind at rest and will set you on the best course of action. Happy sailing!

Is it the external keel with bolts? If so the grounding didn't make a dent in the leading edge? What about the leading edge of the keel-hull joint. Cracks in the gelcoat are not to warry about(consmetics) but can be caused by moisture, flexing, delamination or even a biger structural problems. To find what caused the cracks look at the chainplates. And the chainplate attachments to the hull/bulkhead. Make sure those areas are not moving or working, and that they are solid.

Leward shrowds should be loose on a beat. Thats how you tune the rig. How are the bulkhead tabbings. Thats one of the first things anyone will look at. Are there any cracks or rot?

I have a C&C 38 from 1976 that was somewhat neglected before I bought her in 2002. It used to be labeled "soft boat". But I turned her into a solid boat and I love every bit of her. Very fast boat. Comfortable down below and I wouldn't change her for the world.
