We've decided on a late May/early June cruise up to the Chesapeake Bay area. We'll be coming up (hopefully) the Dismal Swamp and pick up another couple in Yorktown. From that point, we'll have 7 full days to cruise before we return to Yorktown.

I've got the Waterway Guide and the correct charts. Now I'm trying to plan a rough itinerary and find it to be a bit overwhelming - so many places to go!

We like to anchor when we can to avoid paying slip fees - but will probably stay in a marina a night or two just for convenience. Interesting shore activities are a plus if they are within walking distance, but all 4 on board are sailors and enjoy the sail as much as the shoreside activities. An adult beverage at a local hangout is a plus also.

Has anyone done a similar trip and could share their thoughts?

Hello, Karen.

If you're in the Yorktown area, you should definitely spend a night in Sarah's Creek and eat a gourmet dinner at the River's Inn. You can anchor in the creek or take a slip in the marina. From there, up to Mobjack Bay, and anchor out in the East River or the Severn River. Then to Jackson Creek (Deltaville), and then over to Onancock on the Eastern Shore. Back south to Cape Charles. The winds that time of year are usually southerly, unless a front is coming through, so going back south can be a chore. Add a bit of time for getting back south.
