Elsewhere on this forum we have discussed the opportunity of acquiring a boat at a saving, because of the downturn in the US boat market and the weakness of the US dollar compared to the Pound Sterling and the Euro.

In order to do so the following numbers have been used :-

1.00 USD = 0.609112 GBP

US Dollar British Pound

1 USD = 0.609112 GBP 1 GBP = 1.64173 USD

1.00 USD = 0.682177 EUR

US Dollar Euro

1 USD = 0.682177 EUR 1 EUR = 1.46590 USD

V.A.T. (UK) 20% on value and cost of shipping

Import Duty 10%

Survey $16/foot excluding surveyor's travel charge

Transport by Ship $273/ft

Boat selected Watkins C/C 36ft Sloop list price #US 31,500 L I N K

NB Excluded from the above is the buyer's cost of getting to the US and also the cost of accompanying the boat on the ship.

Example :-

Boat Cost : $US 31,500 (£19,193)

Transport : $US 9,820 (£5,981)

Total : $US 41,320 (£25,168)

Survey : $US 576 (£351)

VAT on : £25,168 (£5,034)

Duty on : £19,193 (£1,920)

CE Marking: £1,500 (£1,500)

---------------------------------------------

The 36ft Watkins 1983 costing $US #31,500 (£19,193)

will land in the UK for a minimum of £34,000 ($US55,174)

---------------------------------------------

Comparison pretty meaningless - however a 36ft Westerly Conway 1981 is priced in Scotland for £39,500 tax paid

L I N K

-------------

Although £5,500 pounds saved does appear to be significant, there are other costs which have not been factored in, if that be the case, then there does not appear to be great savings on importing a boat from the Eastern Seaboard of the USA to the UK. Yet a saving of 5,000 GBP on a the cost of a similar size UK boat 2 years older is not to be sneezed at.

Is that a good price on transport? I've not done it myself, but my brother in law has a few times and I swear he got a much better price than that. I suppose it could depend on a lot of factors.

Edit: my brother in law said to try a1 auto and boat. They're the co. he said he usually goes with & they give you a price estimate for free.
