Just dreamin?

Just found this site and have spent last 2 hours on line. Am a single 52 y.o. who started sailing a couple of years ago after dreaming about it for years beforehand. Do some day sailing but spent 3 months in '04 sailing through Red Sea, Suez Canal, onto Cyprus then island hopping around Greek islands - the trip of a lifetime.

My long term plan is to buy a boat already based in the Med. and spend several years (I hope) as a liveaboard yachtie.

Would love to hear experiences of others who may have taken the plunge.

Will certainly be keeping an eye on postings in the crewfinder!

I actually joined the yacht "Wallaby Creek" in Hurghada so only spent a relatively short time sailing to reefs and dive sites but adventure began when heading into Gul f of Suez and forced to seek shelter due to very strong winds in a place called Mersa Thelemat.

Second day at anchor a crew member - geologist by profession - decided to explore distant hills. Late in the afternoon the commander from local naval station came alongside and asked to move on as weather had abated. Told him we were just waiting for missiing crew member to return - and then the proverbial "hit the fan."

He radioed for army search to begin. We were told to motor to naval harbour where boat was tied to wharf and guards placed either end. Our passports were taken and the waiting began. Henry finally turned up oblivious to all the fuss and he was promptly taken away to Suez for questioning. We weren't to see him for about five days.

Meanwhile all on boat used mobile phones to contact respective embassies (Aussie, English and Swiss) as well as families.

Two days later our passpports were returned along with a bag of oranges and another bag of bottled water all paid for by the naval commander - he was quick to point out and we were asked to leave.

A great dinner table story that kept my family in stitches - and still does.
