I am about to start updating my safety gear. I have looked at the inflatable PFD 1's and was reasonably convinced that this was the best way to go.

However as I was leaving the chandlery, just for interest I tried on a Hutchwilko collared vest type of safety jacket (also offshore compliant) and was impressed by the comfort of the thing. I wonder if I would still feel comfortable after wearing it for a four hour night watch.

What are the people who are voyaging wearing?

I have 2, old automatic inflatable PFD's, but I have never felt totally secure wearing them and wonder just what is the best from both a safety and comfort viewpoint.

David.

Hi David,

In the Coast Guard we have used inflatable PFD:s for years. As they are comfortable and unobtrusive they are fasr more likely to be worn than the non-inflatable variety. Also, in ot weather they do not add a lot of insulation making it even hotter for the wearer.

Our experience has shown that the top of the line inflatable PFD:s are the way to go. They should be fitted with crotch straps or similar to prevent them riding up when supporting a person in the water. The ones we use are also fitted with a lifting strop and a securing ring for a safety-line. A spray hood is also a good thing to have on the PFD as is some form of light.

When I fitted out NAUSIKAA I bought exactly the same type although of a different manufacturer (so I could not be accused of "borrowing" state property)

Aye

The plus side of inflatables is they are not dangerous to wear below decks (if they aren't automatic). If they are automatic they can be set off in very rough weather. Inflatables should never be worn under restictive clothing or harnesses. I wore the collared vest type of lifefacket when racing dingy's and they are comfortable enough unless it gets hot. Maybe a couple of each? Like reading your posts and your outlook on life Auzee. Good Sailing!

Hi SLP,

Thanks for the compliment. Coming from someone who adopts the abbreviated moniker of such an important international luminary as our erstwhile Minister for Culture, I am humbled indeed. All I can say is wash yer tie, and keep it up.

Thanks for your thoughts on the lifejackets.

Cheers

David
