Default Montevideo 43 built by Scholtz in SA

I'm interested to learn more about a Montevideo 43 sloop built by Fred Scholtz in South Africa. The boat was supposedly designed by Doug Petersen. Any info on the boat or builder appreciated.

My name is Angela Collins. I have a yacht brokerage in Durban, South Africa. I looked through my research file on South African yachts and came up with adverts from Medmarine Boat Builders. The July 1988 advert explains that they were completing their second Montevideo 43 from mouldings supplied by John Robertson Yachts (PTY)ltd. John Robertson Yachts are now known as Robertson and Caine and build the Leopard catamarans. The next advert I found was from May 1990. Medmarine Boat Builders were building two designs; the Montecarlo 43 and the Montevideo 43. The construction was hand laminated balsa core hull and deck, with shoal draft wing keel which is integrally laminated with the hull, large rudder and sloop or ketch rig.The factory address was Queens Warehouse, Cape Town Docks.

No specifications were provided and the designer is not mentioned in the advert.Fred Scholtz Marine had an advert in SA Yachting magazine in April 1992 advertising that he produced the Islander 56 monohull, Islander 48 monohull, Simonis 35 monohull and Mayotte 465 catamaran. Hope this helps as I know how frustrating it can be to find info on "old" designs.

Ms. Collins, thank you very much for your note and additional information. A Mr. Bruce Tedder of the South Africa Boatbuilders Business Council has advised me that the boat was built by Mr. Fred Scholtz from a design by Doug Petersen (with some amendments by Johan van Rooyen). I have been told by another owner that the design is from Angelo Lavranos and that Mr. Lavranos has confirmed this. I have asked Mr. Lavranos for confirmation. I have tried to reach Mr. Scholtz by phone without success - do you have any contact info for him? I suppose there's a way that most of this could be correct, except for the two designers, if a designer gave drawings to Robertson who built the molds and then gave them to MedMarine (possibly with participation by Scholtz) to build the boats!? Is there a substantial difference between the Montevideo and the Montecarlo?

You note that the hull is cored - does this extend below the waterline? Do you know about the building practices of MedMarine? I'm trying to avoid destructive testing to ascertain the quality of the layup.

I very much appreciate your assistance - finding an informed and helpful broker always makes my day!

Kind regards, John DeLong

Hi

My name is Terence Smith, and I have spent a fair amount of time on a Montevideo, Sailing in SA and then across to Brazil.

Your yacht may well be the same one I sailed on as I know it was sold in the states a few years back. The name of the yacht was originally "Nic" and was later named "Milady"

I am now living in NZ and have been looking to see if any Montevideos are coming onto the market over here.

Please let me know if your yacht is by any chance the same one that I sailed on.

Mr. Smith, I was looking at the boat - named BAHATI - in Annapolis. She is listed by Roguewave Yacht Brokers and is on Yachtworld's web site. She is currently shown as under contract. I did not bid on her as we could not determine the hull construction and she requires a lot of work.

I hope this is helpful in finding your old boat.

Regards, John DeLong

Hi, my name is Tony Purkiss and I live in Newcastle, 2 hours drive north of Sydney Australia. I own an Islander56 (hull #LRCTN27 FSM70 - I56/0790)which I believe is Lloyds Register Cape Town #27 and build #70 for Fred Schultz Marine & I believe fitted out by Medmarine in 1993. I am trying to obtain the paperwork from Lloyds and any other information on my yacht. She was launched in 1993/94 called "Etosha" and owned by a German by the name of Schnider. Can you help me obtain the paperwork that I need? She is very stongly built. End grain balsa core GRP and sails very well. Angelo Lavranos remembers the yacht as it was a very expensive build with twin screws and "over engineered for the lenght". I can be contacted direct on etosha@hunterlink.net.au and would really appreciate any help you can give me. Regards, Tony.

We have recently purchased the Montevideo 43 called BAHATI from Rogue Wave in Annapolis. She is now lying in Maine and we are refitting her for a circumnavigation beginning fall 2006. She was built in 1988 by Robertson-Caine in Durban, designed by Lavranos, and originally called WHISPER. Her construction is balsa core glass to the waterline and solid glass below. We have learned that she was initially sailed eastwise roundabout from So Africa and then to the Caribbean where she spent the last 5 years. We just sailed her offshore from the Chesapeague to Maine and she performs beautifully in a variety of conditions. We're most interested in hearing from any other Montevideo owners and learning of their experiences. We have found one other lying near Annapolis. We also spoke with a So African rigger who remembers her from Durban and then re-rigged her in Annapolis prior to her Caribbean cruise.

I'm a x-owner of a 1980 Montevideo 43 by built by Fred Scholtz Marine in Cape Town. My wife and our 6 months old daughter sailed the boat around the world 2001-2004. It is a strong and safe boat with very good performance. Our boat "Contessa" was solid fiberglass hull. Angelo Lavranos was involved in the design, especially in the Rig design. To my knowledge about 50 Montevideos were build untill 1994. After that time the same hull design was continued in the Montecarlo 43.

Default Montevideo 43

My wife and I own a 1980 Montevideo. It has been a great cruiser livaboard for our family. It was built by Shultz Marine in S. Africa and designed by Angelo Lavranos . The boat has a large fin keel and a skeg hung rudder. Ours is a solid fiberglass hull with glass stringers. The deck is a little unusual as it is all glass as well with glass strnigers. A plus for an older boat as you do not have to worry about rotting core. When I purchased her I thought the 50 hp Perkins might be to small for the 43 but it is a great match. I have never needed more power. She is very sea kindly and parks like a car. I have owned a Morgan 41, Wauquiez 43, Creekmore 34 and a Columbia 36 and none of them were as easy to handle and performance oriented as this boat. The 3 cabin layout made it easy with 2 children aboard.
We are moving ashore this year so if you are interested in a Montevideo or have more questions about them feel free to call me at 4102627414. Jim
