Default motor or sail

Hi,

I'm a newbie (read as wannabe sailor and was looking for some advise on buying a motor yacht or a sail yacht.

I guess my question is, can you sail a motor yacht in deep ocean for long distances? or is a sail yacht a better option?

also...

What advice would you have for a newbie wanting to sail the indian ocean (Seychelles; Maldives; Mauritius; the andaman islands, the lakshadweep islands) from india (cochin port).

Looking for any advice i can get.

thnaks in advance.

jaideep.

If you want to sail a yacht then you should look for a 'sailing yacht'; a motor/sailor is not going to be a rewarding experience but on the other hand if you are happy to run a motor and add to the engine power with a bit of added wind power then a motor sailor is a compromise. Most motor sailors are way under powered in the sail plan so they are never going to perform as a yacht.

Regards

Peter

If you're asking whether a motor vessel, no sail, is a reasonable cruising boat, particularly for the destinations you are considering, I would say "no". Cruising motor vessels get about 2 miles to the gallon of fuel consumed!

It's been done, but fuel tankage and range is a very important consideration, and most motor yachts are not set up for ocean passages. There are additional concerns - some sort of stabilizer for beam seas, "flopper stoppers" for at anchor.

Personally, having sailed for 20 years, and now on a power catamaran, for us there was no thought involved. For ocean passages a sailboat is the way to go. For our present more limited coastal cruising where we can anchor every night, the power boat is a reasonable choice. I wouldn't consider taking this boat offshore if the wind was over 15 knots or so. For a sailboat that's perfect conditions.

Thanks a ton Bedouin and Jeanne, the information is really helpful. On your advise I’m now in the market for a sail yacht, thanks again for the quick revert.

Rds,

Jaideep.
