Default off shore sailing program

im looking for a program that i can take that is a month or so long, to get the feel of what it would be like to be living on a boat. i think i remember someone saying to me one time that there are boat owners who take people on month long trips and then you stop at places that require some help (missionary work i guess you could call it) for a couple days and then move on. has anyone ever heard of this? i tried googling it but i cant seem to find anything.

Have not heard of a course like that, however, you could take a week liveaboard course w/ Blue water sailing, Ft. L. I think just one week w/ strangers can tell you whether you would like it or not, or be able to know what things you can't do w/o, such as a gen. ect.

Phil, one excellent example of what you're describing can be found at www.mahina.com John is very experienced and the boat is a gem. However, it's predominantly done in the South Pacific and is pricey due both to fees and airfare. Still, it's the 'real deal'; it will give you first-hand exposure & structured instruction on how to do 'real' cruising. Read a few of the logs to get a feel for how events unfold...

I have the name of a captain that, when done chartering his boat in the Bahamas may take someone on while he returns the boat back up to New England. Maybe a 2 week trip or longer.

His boat name is Skyelark and inquires can be made @ Orcasailing.com
