At 63 years old I am selling everything up and buying a sail boat again, Looking at spending my remanding years cruising and the biggest question is the type of boat I have thought of a Jeanneau or a Benneteau around 45ft. BUT, I have been reading of late of boats losing rudders, It's got me thinking maybe I should change my thinking and style of boat, CC with aft cabin a little more comfort an older boat like a 50ft gulf star or Morgan with a skeg protecting the rudder, I think I would be a bit pissed of if I lost my rudder crossing the Atlantic and it dose worry me that the Jeanneau's and the like have no rudder protection ,but for me great for club racing and coastal cruising ,but But but.

I live in New Zealand and intend to buy in the US or the Med, My aim is to Cruise the med join the arc rally back to the Caribbean then thought the Panama and home possible 10 years latter via the Pacific.

Any ideas???

My old boat was a 48 ft bowman

I am not knocking any other boats, but we seek as much protection as we can get. Everything is a compromise, and to skeg, or not skeg may be one of those compromises.

I know , One of the main reason's for choosing Jeanneau,Beneteau was the resale value when I return to NZ, What do you do resale against safety

Graham,

I'm certainly no expert, but...

I believe you would do well to do an internet search for vessels listed on the market in the Caribbean. Then come on over and start your search in the boatyards of Puerto Rico and then move on to St Thomas, the BVI, St Martin and Antigua. You will certainly find the boat of your dreams here at an affordable price and avoid the wear & tear of an Atlantic crossing. Interisland flights are fairly cheap.

I'm not sure about the others, but there is no sales tax or duty paid on boats purchased (or sold) in the USVI... furthermore (assuming that New Zealand has the same deal as Australia with the USA) if you purchase an American built yacht, the current Free Trade Agreement between them allows one to import the vessel without import duties applied. You could save a bundle both coming and going.

Have a look at the classifieds in All At Sea and the Caribbean Compass for local listings. www.yachtworld.com also has a world-wide data base for vessels listed by brokers which is a good tool to compare vessels.

Happy Hunting,

Kirk
