Default Sea of Cortez Advice

I have always wanted to explore the Sea of Cortez. My plan would be to try to find an inexpensive, cruising boat ($10,000 / 30-35”) that I could use in those relatively, sheltered waters. Now to the meat of my post! I would appreciate input and advice on inexpensive boatyards / marinas, that I could use to base / store the boat between cruising episodes. I am not a “gold faucets” type of guy, obviously, but would like at least minimal amenities combined with safety and security. I should mention that the “Admiral” is Puerto Rican, speaks fluent Spanish and is Latin “street-smart”. Any input, based on experience or solid word of mouth would be most appreciated.

I am currently in Marina Seca, San Carlos Sonora, Mexico. It is a good yard with great facilities for working, stowage, launching etc and it is cheap (store a 38' yacht for $150 per month in a very secure yard).

There are many yachts here for sale at bargain prices. Keep an eye on Yachtworld, contact the marina direct for boats which are being sold to recover storage costs and make your requirements known to Sea of Cortez Yachts.

1) San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico Forums
2) Sea Of Cortez Yachts (San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico)
3) Marina San Carlos

It is absolutely a buyer's market. The sheer numbers of inexpensive boats here for sale is mind boggling. Having said that, you will not get an ocean ready, nothing-left-to-do style of boat for $10k. But, for that sort of money you will find some good well found boats which need a bit of elbow grease and a few dollars to turn into comfortable, safe inshore cruising boats.

The Guaymas Port storage marina and Marina Real also have cheap hardstand storage.

I have a 30' boat in Guaymas. It cost me $100 a month and if I am going to stay on the boat it goes up another hundred. Good security and professional. I spent eight months in the sea and it was amazing. I'll be sailing down in a couple of weeks with my new boat and plan on spending a hot summer there! Should be fun.
Good luck.
