Default Self Steering Gear

We have just launched a jib sheet to tiller self steering gear. Basically the jib sheet winch is mounted on a platform which swings like a door. The tension in the jib sheet pulls it forward, and this is balanced by a spring made from shock cord. Luffs and puffs are transmitted to the tiller via a linkage to steer back on course. It works a treat. More details on our website: www.steersman.netB)

Is it suitable only for tillers or is there a version for wheel steering?

The Steersman design is just for tiller steering at present. We are hoping to bring out a wheel steering version soon.

I think it's great someone is promoting a sheet-to-tiller steering system; it's a concept that has worked for many decades altho' not with all boats. For those who want a better understanding of the general concept along with design guidance on which boats will and will not lend themselves to this method, you should try to find an out-of-print copy of John Letcher's Self-Steering for Sailing Craft. Perhaps the vendor advertising his system could even consider getting the rights to and selling this book (Int'nat'l Marine was the original publisher, my memory tells me).

Thanks Jack for your support. I didn't know of Letcher's book when I came up with the idea, and I have since found out that Joshua Slocum played around with sheet to tiller steering on circumnavigation in the eighteen nineties. Anyway . . .

Yachting Monthly Magazine, one of the top UK yachting magazines have recently sail tested the Steersman. Their report article appears in the August edition of the magazine.

They have kindly let us have a copy, so we have put it up on our website. Here it is, just follow the link:

Let me know what you think. E-mail me at:
