Default UK to Goa... how???????

If any one has any navigational suggestions, comments, places of interest, general chit chat for this trip will be much appreciated.

Around spain? through france to the med? Med through red sea? or west coast africa? Time of year to attempt this?

Probably be a 35 footer.. so you have something to go on... possibly 2 crew including myself... want to hug the coasts rather than real blue water but once I do my practical may feel different....

This is my 2 year goal currently studying my ocean skipper because of my dream to sail into the sunset etc...

tell me I am mad and why?

I don't think there are a lot of people on this board, or any other, that have sailed to India, particularly the west coast, and I don't think that there's much chance of going from West to East and hugging the coasts. This is a major trip that requires more than a year's commitment.

I suggest that you get either Jimmy Cornell's "World Cruising Routes", or better (in my opinion) the British Admiralty's sailing routes.

Not knowing your level of experience, I think we would be hesitant to make many suggestions for such a long trip. Seasons have a lot to do with the success of your plan, and venturing that far off the beaten path would, in my opinion, call for much greater experience than the usual cruising destinations where you will find lots of others to help you along the way.

Fair winds,

Jeanne

Sound advice from Jeanne P ( as usual). No way you would get me through the Red Sea.. I'll take the long way around Africa thanks.

hi... this is chetan from india. do not know anything about getting here, but can advise about india.

a fair number of cruising yachts do stop by, mostly between october and march

they usually make port in mumbai and then proceed down to goa and cochin

i think most of them come from south east asia - singapore / phuket / langkawi / etc - though i am not sure

there are no marina facilities yet in india but you can get decent fibre glass work and engine work done. for fuel you will have to pay a price to get it transported to your boat or line up at a fishing dock.

shaun weng who is a member on www.7knots.com was here last year on his circumnavigation. i also know of a chap called howard moon from Australia who used to come across every year on a Morgan Giles designed yacht.

if there is anything i can do to help you with your planning do let me know

fair winds

Hi, this is Terry

I went into Goa a couple of years ago from Dubai. I don't have the charts but I anchored off Coco Beach which is just round the headland on the north side of the estuary. I've just checked and it's round the corner from Magos Fort. Paniji is on the south of the estuary. You'll see other boats when you get there. Go ashore, have a curry and a beer then go to the customs office in Old Goa after about 10am. He doesn't keep good hours. Then you'll need to go to the clearing office at Vasco 40km away. It's halfway down the hill into Vasco Harbour on the left. You can easily drive by, just watch for some steps up. Be nice and friendly and reasonably dressed and you won't get hassle. I didn't have to pay a penny. You'll get a friendly taxi driver at the beach. Do not try to sail up the estuary and I didn't fly the yellow flag or try any contact on vhf.

There's an anchorage to the south but I didn't go.

I recommend staying away from Bombay. I was 5 days clearing in. If you must, go to the anchorage by the Gate to India. Be very careful of other boats, shallows and old nets. Anchor and attract the attention of a service boat from the local boatyard. It cost me $300 for in and out but worth it. He showed me the paperwark and the 300 included all the backhanders. If you want to go around India, I'd hire a boat boy from the beach cafe in Goa and leave the boat there.

Be careful of the fishing boats, there's thousands and they're all on a collision course. I was single handing and got no sleep.

Can't help with the trip from SA.

You must have a plan for the monsoon season. A fellow cruiser headed down to the Chagos Islands.

Goa is a great place. In a year or so, I hope to be following you.

hi

as mentioned earlier, there are some lovely cruising areas in India but cruiser's infrastructure - marina / spares / etc - are hard to come by.

If you plan in advance sorting out procedural formalities is not a problem.

Although if you plan to head south down the peninsula, covering first west coast then east coast, you would be well advise to set aside 18 months out of which 4 months would be monsoon weather and therefore virtually non-navigable IMO.

On the west coast the most frequently visited harbours are Goa and Cochin (Quillon). I happen to have friend in both places who can help you with clearing in formalities if you require assistance.

Also head south east to the lakshadweep islands which are stunning.

If you are a member of a yacht club, you may be able to exercise reciprocal membership at the Royal Bombay Yacht Club just next to Gateway at Mumbai. They will sort out all the paperwork for you at a nominal cost with no backhanders (just call the Commodore over for a rum n coke later)

anything more i can do to help just say the word

cheers and all the best

chetan
