Livia and Steve, most of the Cyclone and Typhoon warnings that CruiserLog takes from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center are timed in "Zulu" time. Here is today's offering regarding a Tropical Storm in the Indian Ocean "Imani"

What you see in the text box is '240600Z'

24 is today's date and 0600Z is 6am Zulu or 0600 UTC or 0600 GMT.

UTC ( Universal Time Co-ordinated ) once known as GMT ( Greenwich Mean Time ) for the meridian on which it is based... I reckon UTC is nonsense... it isn't universal... its a Bonapartist plot..... I still speak of GMT..

That said NZ time is 12 hours ahead of GMT... 0600 GMT = 1800 New Zealand time. When you have summer time in NZ you are 13 hours ahead.

Here in Argentina we are currently 3 hours behind GMT... 2142 GMT...1842 Local Time

I agree with Frank.

UTC implies that there is one, universal time. This is not true as there are 24 time zones and some areas which are ½ an hour out from the basic time zone.

UTC is mean time at Greenwhich, which to me says that it should still be known as GMT.

I like the NATO system and talk of Zulu time.

Zulu time is actually the NATO name for UTC itself.

GMT and UTC have some slight differences, so they are not the same thing. Only for practical purposes

"In theory, theory and practice are the same but in practice they are not"

But, for the navigator, they are.

Sorry to be an old dog incapable of learning this new trick but I am a navigator not a physicist so I need nothing more advanced than a sextant, a nautical almanac and a chronometer (showing GMT)

I must admit to using 'Z' in the written form -as in 0230Z - but speak of GMT.

Most times I just use the simpler 'BT' form, 'Brekkie Time', 'Beer Time' and 'Bed Time'

I find the military style of saying 'xxxx Zulu Time' a bit ponderous... shades of '0300 hours AM in the morning'... less is more for me.
