I'm considering having a portable short wave radio as a backup for weather and understand you can hook up to a PC to receive faxes. I've looked (almost) everywhere for the how to but cannot find any detail. Is there anyone here can help please?

I don't know if it works, or even if he knows what he's talking about, but here's a link to one guy's take on it.

Greetings,
If you go to our Cruising Wiki (also a link at the top of this page, below the Banner) -> Contents -> then to Communications at Sea - you should find what you are looking for.
If you need more info. come back with questions - many of our members use their HF radios for weather and emails.
Regards
Richard

I may even try the suggested software myself...

If we are all talking about the same subject ie,, getting weather on your computer via a shortwave receiver - there is software :- SeaTTY 2.0 and http://www.programurl.com/weather-st...on-your-pc.htm
If we are talking about HF radio - another matter.

Years ago there were several boats we met as we crossed the Pacific who couldn't afford an SSB radio, but they had a shortwave receiver - a radio - that they used to receive WEFAX. They ran a connection from the headphones plug on the radio to the input on their computer, and it worked.
Actually, I did the same with our little SONY all-band radio to see if it would work. Tuning was a bit more difficult than on our SSB, but it worked. And it would have looked like the fellow's on the link except that Peter is a bit neater with his wires running around the boat.
