Default Weather for South Atlantic passage in May.

I am considering sailing from Cape Town -> Ascention -> Azores -> Europe. Looking at leaving Cape Town mid May. Are there any weather issues I should be aware of? Unfortuantely I cannot leave earlier than May.

Is anyone aware of any South Atlantic pilot charts on the internet?

May I suggest you contact Tony Herrick of "Cruising Connections". He will be able to assist you with both the weather issues as well as new & used charts and pilots.

Good luck with your passage.

and select:

Thanks "Gord May" but unfortunately Publication #105 “Atlas of Pilot Charts South Atlantic Ocean” has not been scanned as PDF's and are not available.

Hi Robi,

At the time of year for your proposed voyage there should be few problems with the weather.

You may well experience high winds arround the Cape. It can be pretty choppy as far north as Angola but after that you should get good weather.

Of more importance at that time of year are the ocean currents. Your proposed track looks pretty good as you will have the Benguela current carrying you northwards to begin with. In fact, you should have favourabloe currents all the way as long as you keep out of the way of the Canaries current. After leaving Ascension make some westing so that you get over to the South American side of the 'pond' and pick up the northgoing current of Natal in Brazil. Thereafter, folow the mid-Atlantic Ridge to the Azores and from there a rhumb line if you are heading for the Channel.

Enjoy the voyage!

Stephen,

Sorry ‘bout that.

Google “Pilot Chart”, and you’ll find numerous retailers offering #NVPUB105 “Atlas of Pilot Charts--S. Atlantic Ocean” for under $20.
