Default FIDDLER is in CAIRNS (she is now put up for Sale)

FIDDLER, 60 steel cutter, John PUGH design, build by Lindsay SMITH (AU, NSW)

Arrived 21 Sept in Cairns, Australia. Staying till 28th, then heads north towards Cape York and on to DARWIN, Bali and Langkawi Malaysia.

FIDDLER was refitted to the tune of 500k USD, including additions made after finalisation of the initial refit in Thailand till end of 2003.

Hull, Mast & Boom stripped and painted with AWLGRIP paint system.

Cabin refitted and modernised.

>>Complete all new elec wiring, charging sources ( 2 x 190Amp Alternators, 6 Siemens 75 solar panels, wind generator ( AIR-X-MARINE), HEART ac-charger with Link 2000 monitor + BEP elec panel incl AC Monitor. Extensive fitting of special AC outlets (accept 15 different plug types), and DC outlets.

The 190Amp alternators feed 800AH GellCell house bank batteries, while the main engine has a 40AMP dedicated alternator for feeding the seperate 200AH engine battery (new June/05). A 95mm2 cable allows connection of the main eng to the house bank, just in case the eng batt might be flat.

inside and outside RAY ST60 wind,compass, speed/depth full instruments (no repeaters = redundancy), RL80Cplus 10inch RADAR with MARPA, RL530plus Plotter, DELL M60 laptop with Raytech navigator 5.0 on HSB2 high speed network, back up USB Cmap chart reader (world wide charts valued at 20kUSD, both electronic and paper). Back up USB C-map chart reader provides allows navigation via the laptop in case of plotter failure (Redundancy)

- CARC Collision Avoidance Radar Detector

- SEA ME; active Radar Transponder

- WINSLOW 8 MAN OCEAN LIFERAFT with extensive equipment packaged, incl 406MHz EPIRB, GREATLAND Laser, addioniol fishing gear, water storage, entrance platform, and much more ...

- SART McMurdo

- Two RORC sets of flares

- AED (Automatic Emergency Defibrilator)

>>Autopilots x 2 :

TMQ: AP2 autopilot + AP50 autopilot. Each AP has it's own compass and rudder sensor (redundancy). Only the servo is shared, and a spare is available.

>>VETUS Metroliner electronic barometer, giving 24hr and 7 day history of pressure etc.

>>communications

VHF; - RAY230E DSC VHF with 3 handsets + ICOM original VHF with its own antenna on stern frame (reduncancy) + two emer VHF antennas.

ICOM M802 digital DSC SSB with auto tuner (spare original ICOM SSB and tuner avail and original wiring still installed, for easy reinstallation of original SSB = redundancy)

IRIDIUM Satelite telephone, providing world wide communications, and email if necessary. Iridium also allows email as necessay and access to e.g. BUOY WEATHER and OCENS weathernet (subscription required).

- Muir 1500W Elec windlass with two gypsies, plus rope drum. Also installed is an Anchor 500C remote windlass controll (allows control of the windlass from the cockpit.

-two CQR anchors + one Danforth anchor and 120Mtr of 1/2 inch anchor chain. Seperate locker avail for port side anchor chain/rope.

She now has two master staterooms, each with bathroom and shower. A 200ltr black and 200ltr grey tank are installed as well as two! LECTRASAN Waste Treatment Systems, USCG approved for overboard waste disposal within 5Nm zone.

This writeup will be completed at a later stage. Rest to say she has a new mainsail (sept04), a new assym spinaker + pole (nov 04) and many other features, such as dive tanks, walk in engine room, extensive tooling, etc etc etc etc,

That's cool.. a 60 foot steel cutter... Why are you going to Colombia of all places?

Hi, .. why not, many friends have sailed to Cartagena and liked it a lot. Nevetherless, our plans have changed, now we go direct Panama.

Just not my cup of tea. I was going to drive my Jeep from Arizona to Tierra Del Fuego a few years ago, and I was a bit taken a-back by the travel warnings for Colombia...

We sailed together for awhile, Indian Ocean, via Sri Lanka up to Massawa in Eritrea. I did send you an e-mail.
