(Climbing Donner pass in California on Interstate 80 last February)

I've come to the conclusion that my luck may be about to run out as far as driving during the Winter months and never having an accident. This past winter was terrifying, shutting down more than a dozen times in the face of terrible ice and snow on the roadways. There were times when I had no place to stop, and my truck crawled along at less than 5 mph and I still slid and ventured onto the brink of disaster. So what should I do, I asked myself. The only answer I can come up with is not to drive those months, as so many seasoned old timers don't, and I'm only 30, but can see the wisdom in their ways. So if I'm going to do anything think I am de termined to cruise all winter long, down the Baja Penninsula and perhaps other places, returning in the spring when the weather has warmed up, and the roads are free of ice and snow.

Not sure if I can afford to do it this winter, I want a bigger board, but we'll see how much money I can save by say November, and if I still feel the same way, it looks like the Hard Knots will be brought out of Ocean Retirement at least for a few more months.

Please be assured that all the areas and segments of Cruiser Log forums are well supported. For instance with your 7am post to this board you had 36 visits by 12.30 (Oz time). On your watermaker question posted at 7.20, you had 37 views by the same time.

I am not aware of why your post was transferred, but it will receive as much attention on the Poop as it will in any other area. Best of luck with your plans and I know we will all follow your progress with the same enthusiasm as we did last time.

Cheer up! This forum gets a lot of activity. As of 1:38 am, May 31st. Mountain Daylight Savings Time, your post was viewed 62 times.

A lot of time and effort is given freely by at least 8 people, attempting to keep this board operating smoothly 24 hours a day, everyday. Our collective goal is providing a useful resource to those interested in cruising and sailing; a valuable service, free of charge.

Even the moderators, correct each other, attempting to make the board better. For example, recently I posted a topic "Refrigeration" in the Sailing and Cruising Forum and it was moved by another moderator to here in the Poop Deck Forum, as it was a more appropriate forum for the topic. That did not bother me in the least. After I noticed the posted was moved, I realized my mistake.

About your topic:

I also have a CDL, and lived most of my life in winter, snow and ice. I would rather deal with predicable snow and ice, than other bad unpredictable drivers, or zero visibility (no reference point), any day. With a CDL, you should be able to get a job anywhere, including the non or low snow areas. But than cruising does sound like much more fun. That could be a career option. A few months ago I was in contact with a sailing school in Mexico and they were begging for help. I told the guy I lacked the required certification. His response was, "We'll get you certified, if you are willing to work for us". I declined as I had other plans and commitments.

Thank you, and yes. When I got stuck on Catalina Island in 05, I ended up working as a bus driver (even without my Passenger endorsement), shuttling people back and forth to the aeroport on the interior, and giving people the history, telling jokes, and collecting 10 bucks and hour plus tips. Not too bad.

This past winter was so bad I am seriously thinking of taking Hard Knots out again, if I can scrounge up 9 thousand or so I should be okay for four months in central America, and unlike the flack I got last time for carring what they described as an arsenal on board...
