Default Best name of all time?

What's your nomination for the best ship name of all time?

Personally, I like H.M.S. Victory, it just kind of says it all, doesn't it?

USS Constitution (Old Ironsides)...the nickname drives the point home.

If we are talking names of boats in general...then clearly, "Trim"

One that I heard many stories about and doubted that it really existed was a boat named "FUJIMO" meaning F*** U Jane, I'm Moving Out.

Then last year I was watching a video on rough weather sailing in San Fancisco, and there it was, a Santa Cruise 70 (I believe) with FUJIMO on the sides.

The Beagal was Darwin's ship used for geographical survey in 1830's.

Yes it was, and a legendary ship.

I do wonder why it had such a "humble" name when so many other British Navy ships had very impressive names?

One of my "yachts" is called El Fenix -The Pheonix. When I 1st recommissioned my dad's 1965 boat, I was going to call her "The Endevour" after James Cook's ship, but then she suffered a catostauphic crack up (at the hands of a friend) and after rebuilding her, "Pheonix" was the only name that made any sense...

Sort off topic here, but I read about the HMS Pandora before I read any mythology as a child, -so to me,for some time, the reference to "Pandora's Box" meant the dark nasty little hole where the Bounty's mutineers were kept until the Pandora cracked up on the Great Barrier Reef.

I just watched a movie last night "Master and Commander" about an English war ship, (circa 1805) being sneak attacked by a French war ship. In the end, the english ship HMS <font color="navy"></font id="navy">"SURPRISE" got revenge!

Eagle Sail's comment of course brings us to H.M.S. Revenge, Sir Walter Raleigh's command. Another wonderful name but it does imply that something has previously gone wrong and revenge is needed.

Otherwise, I think Discovery is a great name for a research vessel. Also as a name of a research vessel, H.M.S. Challenger was pretty good.

The R.N. has come up with some great names in the past. What about Valiant, Vanguard, Dreadnought and Indefatigable? Although they have also had some fairly 'pansy' names too, such as Dainty.

I also once saw a GP 14 dingy called PTO (Pleas Turn Over). The name was printed upside down on the transom.

Cheers all,

Stephen

Was it names like these that prompted Gilbert and Sullivan with HMS Pinafore?
