Reports of 6.3 very shallow with tremendous damage to downtown area. We felt it here in Rotorua. In fact, we have been feeling shaking here every few hours for the past 3 days and then a big one went through as I was sitting here on the computer.

The damage is tremendously bad to the downtown area and the Cathedral is reported to have sustained severe damage as well.

We are glad you are safe and sound. So sorry to hear and read online now about the devastation.

We were just there too. We even went up the Cathedral tower which is now on the ground in Cathedral Square. The place was in pretty bad shape due to the quake 5 months ago, now it seems to have flattened the old damaged buildings and hit some news as well. It is such a beautiful city it is terrible to see it thrashed by nature like this.

When we were there we were being shaken by aftershocks nearly everyday and we said it was just a matter of time before something big hits again. News reports have shown the damage to the Crown Plaza Hotel that we stayed in on the top floor when we first arrived in New Zealand.
