Absolutely right Richard.

I happened to be in Cape Town when she arrived there. She is now lying in Gothenburg and there seems to be some question about what her future will be.

Is it the German sail training ship "Alexander von Humboldt"?

There can't be too many ships with green sails.

Hi Duckie

Cogratulations

Alexandra Van Humboldt spotted off Dover on monday don't quite know what she was doing, we went past her in the morning expecting her to get to Dungeness Point by about 10/1030hrs but when she didnt show we thought we'd missed her

When we were coming home, she was still off Dover and sailing towards Dungie at about 1530hrs couldn't have taken all day to put the sails up!!

Hi,

I would hazard a guess and say Scotland as she is registered in Fraserborough.

Stephen , spot on - just 70nm due east from my ancestral home. Many times as a youngster went off from Lossiemouth across to the Shetlands with my late uncle on his fishing trawler.

It must be great to have access to a good data base!

No Richard. No data base in this case. I just spent too many years doing fishery surveillance work. That even involved taking a Swedish Coast Guard ship out into the waters north of Island so we always called at Lerwick on the way out and back for bunkers and a little R & R. We always lookled forward to those visits and a get together with the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency. Last time I was there we berthed together with the F.P.V. Sulisker and F.P.V. Vigilant. The Shetlands are a fascinating place.

When Sweden had a larger fishing fleet than we now have we ised to send a large minesweeper, H.M.S. Bremön, as a fisheries support vessel. She used to spend much of the time based in Aberdeen but also called in at Peterhead, Fraserborough, Kirkwall and Lerwick. Here a photo of H.M.S. Bremön. She is now part of the Karlskrona Maritime Museum and is berthed about 5 minutes walk from my office.

Lossiemouth I remember too. I visited the Fleet Air Arm base there once.

* Beam: 7.01 m

* Sail surface area: 1050 m2

* Main engine: Caterpillar 550 hp

* Bow thruster

* 2 x 40 kVA generators

* Safety certificate 9930Z

* 7 three-berth cabins with shower and toilet

(1 single and 1 double bed)

* 7 two-berth cabins with shower and toilet

(2 single beds)

* 7 additional toilets

History Of The Artemis

She has her name from the goddess of the hunt, and it was as a whaler she began her career on the high seas. The Artemis was built in Norway in 1926 and served as a whaling ship until the end of the forties, operating mainly in the northern and southern polar seas. From her home port of Oslo, she sailed to Spitsbergen (Svalbard) and into the Bering Sea, fi tted with a steam engine, two auxiliary masts and a variety of harpoon guns. In the fi fties, the Artemis was refi tted to haul cargo and operated mainly as a tramp freighter between Asia and South America until she was bought by a Danish captain from Marstal.

Despite her ready seaworthiness, by the end of the nineties the Artemis was too small to operate as a competitive freighter. She then changed hands again and was reconverted into an elegant sailing ship in 2001. The Artemis now plies the seas in the form of an imposing three-masted barque.

On the subject of ships bearing the name Artemis I can strongly reccomend a novel by C.S. Forester called The Ship. It is a bit dated now but none the less a fine book about a ship named H.M.S. Artemis.

Hi

Great never expected all that information.

It really is amazing how much knowledge is shared with this forum.

Well Done

This is one that should really get your heads scratching?

This hull is high and dry on a riverbank in Sussex England.

It has been there for many years, I thought that it was just a wreck as there are loads of boats up here its a bit like a graveyard in this stretch of the river.

Anyhow a few weeks ago we went past and someone had put a ladder up to her and was walking on the deck.

This week we went past and he was still on the deck walking about and he looks as though he has been recaulking them.

If you can imaging what this boat would look like afloat in pristine condition with mast and sails. I think she would be quite pretty.

I dont know if the guy is renovating her to her former glory or just trying to make a home out of her.

My question is does anybody recognise her and what type of boat is she?

I know absolutely nothing about her.

Hi,

Hard to tell if she is Lapstraked or Clinkered - I will opt for lapstraked.

How about a Norwegian Pilot Boat from the turn of the century ?

It reminds me of the designs of Scot/Norwegian naval architect, Colin Archer (except for stem extension of the keel to the bow)

Another guess about 55ft.

She looks very much like the pedalled powered vessel used by the mad English guy who's just completed a 13 year round the world trip under his own steam mostly on a bike. He turned up on UK breakfast TV shortly after his arrival in his one pair of shorts and an anorak as if he'd just got out of bed - not a hint of sponsorship in sight - and said that he'd now probably have to find a job - amazing that such people still exist!

Pointless interjection if I'm wrong , of course, but ....
