PBY Catalina was the United States Navy designation for an American and Canadian-built flying boat of the 1930s and 1940s. PB stands for Patrol Bomber, with Y being Consolidated Aircraft's manufacturer identification. It could be equipped with depth charges, bombs, torpedoes, and .50 caliber machine guns and was one of the most widely used multi-role aircraft of World War II. Catalinas served with every branch of the US military and in the air forces and navies of many other nations. In the United States Army Air Forces and later in the USAF Strategic Air Command their designation was the OA-10.
There is a privately owned and restored version in Long Beach that lands at Catalina quite often. It has a pretty cool interior using the blister gunner domes as windows for viewing. If I had the money to throw away on an airplane, this would be the one.
Believe it or not, there is one on Sydney Craigs list in the middle of restoration for $1M...

There are four of them lying in shallow water in Darwin Harbour, courtesy of Admiral Yamamoto who swung by after bombing Pearl Harbour. His fleet bombed Darwin on February 19th 1942 as it was heading home. Darwin was subsequently bombed many times by Betty bombers which were escorted across the city by Mitsubishi Zero fighters, well in range from their Indonesian bases.
The Catalina flying boat base was destroyed along with several merchantmen and several warships including the USS Peary and the USS transport Mauna Loa, which is also on the bottom surrounded still with jeeps and WLA style Harleys chained to the decks.
I like the Catalina, but if I were to dig into the loose change, I think I would opt for the Sunderland flying boat. Mind you, the little bugger which knocked out the Bismark , the Fairy Swordfish was also equipped with pontoons for water landings.......What Ho!
Incidentally Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman have just left town after filming scenes from their forthcoming Baz Luhrman film which features the bombing of Darwin. She is depicted arriving in a wonderful old clinker built launch after stepping off a Qantas flying boat in Darwin.
('Qantas' being an acronym for Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Services).

Oh yes! Sunderland flying boat a very fine aircraft indeed...but even in my best dreams of riches, I doubt I could afford something that large.

We are getting far off matters nautical but, if I could choose any aircraft I wanted to own just for fun, I would go for a Mosquito. What fantastic machines and built out of plywod too. Now, get one of those, get rid of the paint, do a great sanding job and varnish it. WOW - talk about brightwork!

Ive just had a look at your pictures in the gallery and I must say your boat looks rather superb!!
It looks as though it has been a lot of elbow grease But the results Well worth the effort
You must be very pleased. What type of yacht is she. Looking at the hull I would assume she would go through anything!
Have you done much sailing or has all your time been taken up to get her up to the standard she is.
Ive always fancied the flush deck plenty of room to work or sit with a cold BEER.

Hi guys,
Wow, it has been a long time since I was in Chesapeake bay but I would guess this is a copy of the Pride of Baltimore.
What I am more certain about is that she is a Baltimore Schooner.
