Default Whale and Dolphin hunting?

Whale and Dolphin hunting

Is the practice of whaling and dolphin hunting still going on around the world or has this now finally ended. This horror always comes to mind as one sails around and sees these beautiful creatures. [V]

I don't know but it sucks if people are killing whales and dophins again . I know some countries like Japan still whale, or did they quit recently? I can't recall if I read anything about that or what. I love seeing whales.. one night I was sailing about 2100 just southeast of Diamondhead, Hawaii.. the stars were out, the wind was nice.. I had my foot on the tiller making small adjustments, but Luana was sailing herself... All of a sudden I heard a sound like a boiler exploding! I bolted upright and looked in the direction of the sound..and there, 20 feet off my port bow was the back of this enormous whale submerging towards the boat. In terms of scale it looked like the back of a hippo! I could see the markings and a small dorsil, and the tail, which smoothly submerged. I was sure this massive creature was about to destroy Luana if it were to hit her keel as it looked like we were going to collide, however, the whale (I learned later was a 50 foot humpback), must have "seen" the keel with his sonar and dived lower. He didn't resurface, but I seemed to feel a subsonic vibration unlike anything I've ever heard about... it felt like being on one of those vibrating massage mats, and you seemed to be able to hear something that wasn't audible (a brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr)... It was either something science doesn't understand, or his sonar hitting Luana's fibreglass hull, I don't know, but it changed me forever...and was moving..

Norway just announced they would start commercial whale hunting again.

Whale hunting is still legal for indigenous peoples in Alaska and Greenland, and for the Caribbean island of Bequia, though I doubt that they catch very many - used to be Bequia might catch one a year, and it's possible they've stopped entirely by now.

When we were in the Solomon Islands neither whales nor dolphins would allow a boat to come close to them, probably because the locals still hunt them for meat and for ritual purposes.

Japan has just started its "scientific" whale hunt: http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994995 Several years ago one of the anti-whaling groups tested meat sold in Japanese markets and found that dolphin meat was being sold, though there is no place where hunting dolphin is legal.

Iceland, too: http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994069

and here's some info. on how they are killed: http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994755

Whales and dolphins are so endearing. Here's a link to some photos we took of them in the South China Sea. http://www.fototime.com/ftweb/bin/ft.dll/p...6-F15C31AAA12B}

If a certain species of whale has a population in the hundreds, then even killing one for some ritual by a native or aboriginal tribe is too many. It's time we stop the political correctness and tell them they have to hunt something else or there will be the same consequences as rogue fishing vessels, i.e. arresting the crews and sinking or seizing the vessels.

I knew Iceland did, and I remember some other countries saying they were going to no longer abide by the whale hunting prohibition... I guess this is sort of like Rhino and Elephant Tusks or Tigers Genitals being illegally or unethically marketed to exclusive markets in Asia.

No, but I will.. tomorrow. I've gotta go back out there and do some more work on Hard Knots. I've got a good idea for making the cockpit hatch more watertight.

However, I'm a big supporter of wildlife on our oceans and will look forward to reading it.. I'll let you know what you think.. I've been on your site before, however.

Whaleing is still being carried out both commercially and as a custom; the same for Dolphins. While I deplore commercial hunting of these beautiful and graceful animals hunting them as a tradition is hard to condem as it is often the main means of protein for those involved. Do we accept that while visiting a foreign shore that those people have a right to tell us how to live once we return to our home lands - I think not so do we have the right to tell the people we are visiting how they should live?? I can't accept hunting these animals for money but if it is a long standing custom and not just for the 'kill' then as much as I don't like it I feel I have to say nothing as I'm a visitor to their country.
