Heavily-armed Somali pirates have hijacked a French vessel carrying tourists in the Gulf of Aden, the eighth such attack this month.

The number of people on board, the name of the ship, and its destination are not yet clear.

Witnesses say the pirates captured the French passengers and took them to Somalia's semi-autonomous Puntland region.

It is believed that the abduction could be an attempt to press the French government to release six Somali pirates who were arrested by French commandos in April.

Full report.

French Foreign Ministry says.

Pirates have hijacked a yacht carrying two French nationals off the coast of Somalia,

Reports said attackers seized a French vessel in the Gulf of Aden and tourists may be on board.

However, it was not yet clear how many people the sailboat was carrying.

"The ministry confirms that a yacht with has been the target of an act of maritime piracy in the Gulf of Aden," it said in a statement.

The ministry condemned the attack and called for the release of the two French citizens.

-------------

Note,

This above report dated 3/9/08 does not state when the Hijack took place. After the Le Ponant hijacking another yacht was reported by the Yemen Coast Guard as having been hijacked - Nothing further has been heard of that 'Incident'.

Another factor is emerging - A person Andrew Mwangura LINK Appears to have instant knowledge of attacks -

??????

From the report linked above:

Quote:
Heavily armed gangs have seized at least 30 vessels so far this year in the Gulf of Aden, making the shipping lanes between Somalia and Yemen the most dangerous in the world. "Even some of the Puntland police are involved in piracy, because they can make a hell of a lot of money," he said.
