Cargo ship Amiya Scan hijacked off the Northern coast off Somalia

Source AFP

Somali pirates have hijacked a Panama-flagged cargo freighter off Somalia as it was sailing to the Romanian port of Constanza, its owner and a Kenyan official said Monday 26 May 2008

"A ship owned by Dutch Reider Shipping was boarded off the coast of Somalia by pirates... The ship was hijacked in international waters in the Gulf of Aden," the owners said in a statement.

"The crew members are four Russian officers and five Filipino seamen. All relatives of the crew members have been informed and have been offered every support available.

"The ship owners stress that its first and foremost priority is the security of the crew members," the statement added.

The MV Amiya Scan was carrying a knocked-down drilling rig from the Kenyan port city of Mombasa when it was seized.

Kenyan maritime officials said the ill-fated freighter left Mombasa on May 19 with no contact since.

The waters off Somalia, which has not had an effective central government for more than 17 years, are considered to be among the most dangerous shipping lanes in the world.

More than 25 ships were seized off Somalia last year despite US navy patrols, according to the International Maritime Bureau.

Latest Info : Meanwhile Somali officials are reported to have said that the AMIYA SCAN had arrived at the town of Bargal today and that coast guards had been sent to the area.

Reider Shipping BV is a 100% subsidiary company of German shipping company Hermann Buss GmbH & Cie from Leer

I suppose that anyone in Somalia with enough money to hire his own army could also buy his own coast guard. But come on, there is not a semblance to law and order in that country, so no coast guards.

Interestingly, only a year ago, on 30th May, between 12 and 35 heavily armed Islamist fighters arrived in Bargal in two fishing boats from southern Somalia and clashed with local troops. On June 1, a US Navy warship, the USS Chafee, shelled hills around Bargal where Islamist militants were reported to have set up a base. US reports suggest the target was an al-Qaeda operative suspected of involvement in the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Link
