The entry list tell us a lot about boats cruising the oceans in July 2008.

Although the yachts are representing a group entering a Rally , They have come from far off places and will continue their cruises after the rally ends officially in Singapore ( or thereabouts) The models and lengths also give us a good idea of what 2008 regards as suitable sailboats to fulfil dreams. (Only one boat is not a sailboat - however, the Diesel Duck is a good boat to go cruising

DIVERSITY

A scan of the above 2 fleets shows an amazing diversity in the both the builders

and their models. Only the Beneteau 38 in the monos and the Granger 42 in the catamarans do we find boats of the same model - (They are probably of different years !!!!!!) It does illustrate the fact that sailors and cruisers are of independent minds.

Certainly an impressive number and variety of boats and nationalities. I've been curious as to when particpants return to Australia. While the majority of this year's rally will undoutedly be going on further, I would have expected some of the Australian boats to want to return some time after the rally. My curisosity stems from the need to plan such a trip myself from my base in KL back to Sydney in a couple of years time. One option I had in mind would be to accompany one or more boats sailing back to Oz at least part of the way. The list of ports for the rally also gives me some good possibilities for my own return journey in the reverse direction as I would like to take the opportunity to explore some of Indonesia on the way.

Any suggestions from previous rally participants would be most helpful.

Hello Windquest,

You will have noticed that the Rally per se completes its journey in Batam - Indonesia at the end of October. Participants are then free to cruise further afield and as this timing coincides with the start of the North East Monsoon, many will cruise up the Malacca Strait visiting the west coast of Malaysia and continue to Thailand's cruising waters. Others will may tack their way up the N.W coast of Borneo (wind on the nose). Those Australians who are not continuing cruising in S.E. Asian waters will be heading back to Australia during November and early December (arriving in time for Christmas)
