Default Clueless......

Hello all and thanks for letting me into your sailing community.

I have never sailed a boat but have always been a traveler and seen some amazing things in my time. Now 45 I still have the need for adventure and want to forgo a land base and have something to live and travel with. The sea has always held a fascination for me and it seems to be the way forward for the ultimate freedom and adventure.

I've read plenty of things on the net over the last couple of weeks and realize that I have to step into a very sharp learning curve. Any advise anyone has would be received with much gratitude.

Hi Sean,
The good thing about deciding to get your feet wet, is that there is no need to study and cram. You can be sailing from day one and most sailing clubs offer basic instruction. The whole sailing knowledge thing something which is, in my opinion, best learned through hands-on experience. If you can understand the physics of sailboat propulsion and keeping the boat in a mast-toward-the-sky attitude, the only things you need to bone up on before heading out onto the water are matters affecting shipboard safety.

Sailing can be an interesting diversion, a great sport or a wonderful lifestyle depending upon how deeply you immerse yourself. You will commence learning as soon as the interest develops and you will not cease learning until you set the springs against the pearly gates.

Try getting in touch with the local sailing and cruising clubs, perhaps you may want to post something under the crew available section of this forum, and the Poms have a couple of really good sailing and cruising magazines which I heartily recommend. Practical Boat Owner being perhaps the premier mag for sailors in the UK.

Best wishes and keep us posted on your progress.
Dave.

Many thanks Dave.

I have found a local sailing base and am going to investigate today.
I was looking at the "Sailing for dummies" book last night, is it worth a read?

Sean.
