My name is Andy; I have sailed the local waters around Vancouver, and Vancouver Island for about 15 years, in boats ranging from Lasers and Hobies (in the old days), to 40ft Beniteaus and 37ft Juneaus. I also chartered in the BVIs, for a wonderful vacation last year.

I don't own a boat right now, but as I am a member of one of the local sailing clubs (www.jibset.org), I get to use the club boats for racing and what I like to call tourist/picnic sails...to be honest, these are my favorites.

I have CYA basic and intermediate coastal cruising, VHF, Coastal Nav, and am planning a first aid soon. This gives me pre-reqs for the instructor course which I am seriously thinking about taking. From my readings, I think the Ham Radio license would be handy also.

I was laid off a few months ago with this downturn, and I am not seeing a fast recovery (I'm a project manager/techie), so I am thinking that this might be very early retirement for me, and I may as well enjoy myself.

In my previous life I flew around the world, and worked on projects for months at a time. I miss the travel, but not the work, so the plan is to acquire a suitable blue-water sail boat, and....

So, I'm happy to join CL and hopefully pick your collective brains, and maybe we will meet in person one day.

Happy Sails

Andy

Welcome aboard Andy!

Pull up a pew and enjoy the banter here.

It was good to hear of your plans although I am sorry you were laid off. Anyway, make the most of every situation, get on the water and enjoy yourself.

The Orcas migrate along the protected waters of the "Inside Passage", I not sure of the dates. The tourists flock here to see them; the tour boats make a fortune accomodating them. I would just love to dive with them, but I've also said that about the 6 gilled sharks in the region aswell. The best sightings I have seen were from the Victoria ferry, and from Campbell River on Vancouver Island, (50"01'36.16N 125"14'39.07W). Tofino, on the west coast of the island will also see a lot of whales, incl Gray, Humped back, and orcas.

I just got back from a 5 day cruise and learn. On Monday we saw some J pod and K pod orcas just of Stuart Island. Marvelous.
