A short introduction from a new forum member.

Hello to you all! My name is Ben, from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Me and my soon to be wive annemiek are planning to cruise around the world on a small budget. We bought a very nice Victoire 34 this spring and now we are in the process of refitting it to our needs, but also to our budget :-)

We have sailed a lot in Dutch waters and are slowly expanding our horizon, which is a lot of fun. I am continually looking for experiences and tips on all sorts of areas concerning boating, and I think that I found the right spot here.

Our philosophy is to keep it as simple as possible and focus on maximum freedom instead of luxury. For example, we took the fridge out of the boat, but are thinking about purchasing a small and efficient watermaker instead.

I am very happy with what I've read on this forum allready, and I hope I can contribute to it as well.

Kind regards

Ben

Welcome aboard...looking forward to hearing about your refit and cruising plans. Many of us here are at various levels of cruising readiness while many others have thousands of miles under the keel. Lots of good people willing to lend words of assistance!

Welcome! Please post your progress and questions in the forums. Many people are doing similar preparations and can share their experiences with you.

Like you, we (my husband and I) have taken the refrigeration out of the boat--I would like to design and build a new system...someday...but not now. We're presently at the tail end of a major rebuild and are living aboard (in the boatyard!) without refrigeration--it works as long as we get ice from time to time for things we need and because we frequent the grocery for fresh fruits, meats, and veggies. Living aboard I can see this working quite easily but when passage making it will surely limit our choices quite a bit.

Watermakers can add much complexity--if you'd like things to be simple you might wish to look into water capture systems (deck and sail) as well as lots of water storage. There's a great book out there called something like "Voyaging on a Small Income" by Annie (Hill?) which discusses keeping things simple and making choices to have an enjoyable voyaging life with little spending. A good read.

Again, welcome! and enjoy the forums.
