There is a page on the Cruising Wiki that may help you HERE. (A sloop is a single mast yacht)

If not, please more questions here.

Thanks for replying, Lighthouse. I figured the Lynn Rival, which appears to have only one mast must be a sloop. I was looking for confermation.

most of the yachts on the Great Salt Lake must then, by nature of being one-masted vessals, be sloops as well.

What makes a boat a "yacht" ? ... is it a question of size or is it a matter of pomposity ? .... In my experience brokers, when keen to sell, will call anything a "yacht" & by their definitions a "yacht" can have one or many masts or no mast at all ...

its a glam word.

pretty much these days all it means is a privately owned boat. as with most things marketing got ahold of a word and mangled it till it has no real meaning anymore.

Not necessarily an exotic word for a yacht :-

1550–60; Early Dutch and German 'jaght' , short for jaghtschip hunting ship, equiv. to Dutch 'jacht' hunt (deriv. of jagen to hunt) + schip ship

[Probably obsolete Norwegian jagt, from Middle Low German jacht, short for jachtschip : jagen, to chase (from Old High German jagōn) + schip, ship.]

Another item of trivia : what is the difference between a boat and a ship ? A Boat can be carried on a Ship.
