Hello everybody,

I'm English but have been living and working in France for the last 20 some years, living in the Var, and situated about halfway between Marseille and Nice. I did a lot of sailing/cruising in England, mainly North west coast, but nothing recently. Now retired and would like to return to sailing. I've always admired the Swedish folkboats and their derivatives so I'm busy searching the net for examples for sale, and for accounts of cruises in similar boats.

I'm delighted to have found this forum which will be an enormous source of information.

Mike

Hi Mike and welcome aboard,

It is good to have you here with us in this friendly crew.

Ah yes, the Folkboat, or folkbåt as it is written in Swedish. Tord Sundén's classic design submitted entered into a competition to draw the lines of a boat every family could afford. He won the competition and over 4,000 were built in wood according to the class rules and a further 1,000 or so in GRP. The GRP model is still in production in Denmark (lovely but pricey). Then followed a myriad of derivations, such as the Contessa; herself a fantastic cruising yacht.

I love traditional Scandinavia boat design and have always been impressed by the folkbåt but, being Swedish, what else can I say?

If you are interested in an original rather than a derivative, there are always lots of folkbåts for sale in Scandinavia. If you need any help with translation to or from Norwegian, Swedish or Danish just let me know.

Good luck with your return to sailing and, again, warm welcome to CruiserLog.

Aye // Stephen
