So I'm a free man! No, I didn't just get out of prison, my glorious post-college engineering job is getting outsourced to China. I'm taking my amazing 5-year engineering degree and...Traveling? Yeah, you wish you could too. Actually, most people reading this probably are traveling, so I'm the jealous one at the moment.

Anywho, I grew up Between Boston, Mass and Cape Cod, prettymuch on the water. I've sailed with friends a half dozen or so times, and absolutely love it. I'll be backpacking/hiking/hitchhiking/traveling around, simply beacuse I've got nothing better to do, so I've been thinking about Boats. Specifically, I've decided that I want to learn about sailing. Now, first, I'm in no hurry. I work hard, play hard, and love adventure. I'll be bumming around the Med in a few months, and I figure that should be a pretty good place to start my adventures of sailing (somehow...?). So, I'm curious: What's the best way to start (I'm willing to re-learn from scratch) from somewhere in Europe, speaking only English, but willing to try prettymuch anything? Any suggestions on hitching a ride on boats in exchange for helping out a bit, or a good place to learn, someone willing to put me in contact with a friend, ...etc? Just curious.

Anywho, back to the packing. Happy and safe travels!

-Matt

Welcome aboard Matt!

Sorry about the job but you seem to be taking this as an opportunity rather than a set back which is a good thing. A new start in life!

This is the right time of year to be looking for a boat in Europe. Put an add on our "FREE CREWFINDER - SAILING CREW LOOKING FOR POSITIONS" board and you may well get a bite! Well, not literally I hope.

If I was in your position I would not limit myself to Europe. There are many boats in other parts of the world where you could get valuable experience. Once you have that experience then you can continue to seek a boat in Europe if that is an objective in itself. I would gladly offer you some sailing in NAUSIKAA but as I am in the process of moving to Spain it looks as if my sailing will be very restricted this summer.

Good luck in your search!

Aye // Stephen
