Hi everybody,

Many thanks for welcoming us aboard.

I too was launched in 54. I live in the UK (Midlands - can't get much further from the sea in the UK). I am married and have two children (well they were children a few years ago!). I started sailing dinghies with my dad when I was about 7, stopped when I was around 16, then started sailing yachts when I was about 40. My wife is a fair weather sailor but has got her RYA Day Skipper practical, my son worked as a sailing instructor in Greece and Bahrain and is now training as a deck officer in the merchant navy and my daughter hates boats and anything to do with the sea (there has to be one difficult member of a family!).

We have a National 12 sailing dinghy which we keep on a local reservoir and until late 2008 we had a Beneteau Oceanis 343 under charter management with Sunsail in Croatia which we have now sold. We have sailed/chartered in a few places including Gulf of Thailand, Seychelles, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, BVI, St Vincent, Grenadines, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Solent (UK) and Forth of Clyde (Scotland). I have also done some sailing with friends along the UK south coast and a couple of trips across the channel to Cherbourg.

My wife and I are planning on some long-term cruising in the Med as soon as we have overcome a few minor problems such as buying the right boat, working out how we can afford to give up our jobs, responsibility for ageing parents and what to do with our house and belongings in the UK. Apart from our ageing parents I am hoping that I can get some help with resolving my other problems from the vast knowledge and experience on this site.

Sorry if this is a bit long-winded

Regards,.....John.

Good luck on sorting through things to make your long-term cruising plans a reality. There are many useful threads here to take a look at. Don't forget to check out the cruising wiki as well!
