Deciding we needed a larger spot to store our ever increasing library, our beady lil eyes alighted upon a large bulkhead whose only purpose seemed to be providing a flat surface to store one of those mass produced, daggy teak plate and cup units that are common on many older vessels.

Out it went and after a lot of huffing n puffing in the workshop we built a neat glass fronted bookcase out of teak and beach inlay.

Only problem was - where do we now put the glasses, cups plates and saucers?

Off to the magical world of Bunnings (Oz hardware chain).

We came across some stock standard, cheap as chips door handles in stainless steel. The kind you get with tapped screws for bolting through.

A bit of cutting and sanding on some scrap teak and bob's ya uncle! All neat and tidy as though we had planned it all along!

The glasses and cup rack are simply sets of handles screwed in place to the bulkhead and bench top surface.

Still looking for a handy spot for the hot tub!

Smart idea and looks good but don't the cups and plates "jump" out of their racks when you are bouncing around in a seaway?

Not at all - I hate rattles on board and everything seems to stay in place even in a gale. I think the key was to make the tolerances pretty tight. The handles and the crockery have a slight flex to them so everything seems to stay in place rather well. You have to dry fit a few times to get the positioning right.

Mind you - ask that question again when we are midway to New Caledonia in a few weeks

Thanks for the info. Even if the crockery did tent to jump arround it should not be too problematical to attach sime sort on bungy cord to hold things in place. Nice idea and one which I am sure others will copy. Thanks for posting it here.

Have a good trip too. Let us know how things turn out - both with the crockery and the voyage in general

I really like the idea! *Thanks! *It should be great on our boat, which has terribly inefficient storage, and too much wood. *A bit of stainless would be nice.
