On my circumnavigation I calculated that it would take no more than 12 minutes for a vessel I couldn't see over the horizon, in good weather, at night, from the cockpit to be dangerously close. Once had a military ship do it in less than 1/3 that!
Short cat naps, me thinks?

I spent 59 days single-handed from Madeira to Cape Town on the alarm every 20 minutes system throughout the night and napped in the cockpit throughout the day.

Apart from two nights when exhaustion in difficult conditions took over and I lay on my bunk and said b*gg*r it, the sytem served me well.

Hi Graham, did you use an electronic warning system such as radar or AIS during your 'sod it' days? Also you say the conditions were difficult. Did you heave to, tow a drogue, lie a hull, or keep the rags up and use a self steering device?

I'm hoping to single hand from Mexico to the Marquesas (Just want to say 'I've done it') and am always happy to hear first hand from those who have the experience.
Cheers.
