Default wood burning heater.

Hi, I would like to know if anyone has had wood burning stoves on thier boats, if they have had any problems with soot from the chimneys or sparks causing fire to the sail covers. I like the idea of wood but find it difficult to get any information on wether the stack throws out soot and sparks on the deck of the boat. thanks jim.

Default heater

Hi,
I'm not sure about wood but I have a '77 Pearson that has a coal burning heater in the cabin. It was stock equipment on these boats at the time and I surmise that it was safe to use. Pearsons were built in Rhode Island and back then it was common to heat with coal. The main problem I see with solid fuel is storing a quantity of it on board.

We've got a wood/coal stove. No problems. Storage of coal is much easier than wood. Only clean coal is anthracite. Bit-coal is too sooty, almost as bad as softwood.
