Since you guys said we should feel free ask questions, here are some! What would you recommend as the first book to read for someone with little or no sailing experience?

This question will probably get lots of different answers. Could you also suggest other books that contain valuable sailing information?

Thanks!

Tim

Joshua Slocum's "Sailing Alone Around the World"

Tania Aebi's "Maiden Voyage"

and not sailing related, but "Beautiful Swimmers", about the Chesapeake Bay watermen.

I'm in the same boat as you... I finished a couple of books that were very informative. Happy reading!

SAILING FUNDAMENTALS

by Gary Jobson

isbn: 0-684-84994-1

THE NEW COMPLETE SAILING MANUAL

by Steve Sleight

isbn: 0-7566-0944-5

Found Joshua Slocum's "Sailing Alone Around the World" as an ebook:

Hi Kiwifruit,

Click on 'Cruiser Log Homepage' below the logo, top left of this page, and take a gander at the list of books the CL community recommends on the "books" page.

Cheers,

David

Tim,

You have fore sight, in that you will get varied answers.

As already suggested:

THE NEW COMPLETE SAILING MANUAL

By Steve Sleight

ISBN: 0-7566-0944-5

I received it as a present, read it, and keep referring to it. I also highly recommend it.

While it does not cover every topic in detail, it covers most things adequately and concisely, in its 448 pages. Most Chapters are 4 pages, with many diagrams and pictures explaining the concepts.

It was a gift, but the jacket of the Hardcover says $35.00 USD \ $45.00 Canada

The jacket states: "Discover more at: www.dk.com"; and I must do that.

Other Books:

This one will not teach you how to sail, but help you immensely while doing so:

BOATERS POCKET REFERENCE

By Thomas McEwan

ISBN: 0-9774052-0-6

$13.95 USD

766 pages

www.anchorcovepublishing.com

This book hails from inland, Littleton CO, across town from my Denver Metro Area; Denver Colorado USA. Do not let the inland part be of distraction. This is jam packed with Marine, Nautical, Sailor, Mathematical, Electrical, Mechanical, and more Data. It fits in your shirt or hip pocket.

It is not intended to be read cover to cover. It is intended as a reference. It is technical in nature. It was the first sailing book I bought. ....So I'm a bit different than most, I had to figure out and prove to myself why boats float, and how things work.... but it was a good purchase and worth the buck$$.

Further along, when you consider and study cruising:

WORLD CRUISING ROUTES 5th Edition

Companion to World Cursing Handbook (Another Book)

By Jimmy Cornell

ISBN 0-07-140869-X

$49.95 USD / $78.95 CAN

Continuously updated at: www.noonsite.com

When I first became smitten with sailing, the very first books I bought had little to do directly with sailing. I started with amateur "HAM" radio books, and which occupy a fair portion of my sailing refences, which occupies a fair portion of my total library, which is WAY to large to take along cruising.

GOOD GRIEF, if I had the original purchase price of my books, I could afford two yachts! I have to start re-thinking this.... Maybe if I siliconed them all together and water proofed them.... I will have to get back you on this....

I would like to thank you for recommending the Nigel Calder boatowners mechanical and electrical manual. I am presently project managing the repairs on our boat and aas I have never done anything like this before - I am reading madly, asking questions and finally understanding what all these deep voice scruffy baot builders are talking about.

It is a wonderfully helpful book. A definite for the library

regards Gails

Ah, and it is free for Amazon Prime members to borrow this book for reading on their Kindle, too. That's a good deal for Prime members (which I am one!)

Are you the author? I see your boat name is Deja Vu.

The DVD of C-Map navigation software has a bonus section with heaps of good stuff. Currently reading "An Island to Oneself" by Tom Neale and utterly fascinated, but there's also lots of pdf files about navigation ans sailing included.

At $150 or so secondhand it's pretty good value if you have a computer aboard.

The following are a couple of reviews of my own book, "Origami Metal Boat Building."
2 reviews for Origami Metal Boatbuilding–A Heretic’s Guide

  1. 5 out of 5
    R. Hill. – February 27, 2015:
An awesome book!! Lots of boat building and money saving ideas. Full of practical sailing & cruising tips too. My best boating book by FAR!!

  2. 5 out of 5
    Paul Schweikert – February 27, 2015:
This is a very useful and unique book. It is practical in the extreme. Very useful for a sailor fitting out, modifying or building. I’ve worked with boats for a long time and still learned many things from Brent.

I try to make it useful to anyone owning any kind of boat, including a 540 GPD watermaker for under $1,000, an anchor winch for around $75 in materials , furler for under $200, composting head for around $50, self steering for under $75, etc etc.
