Welcome Sailors, Crusiers, Members, and Guests,

The purpose of this forum is to discuss weather, and become more educated about weather, and the natural acts of our earth, and how they affect us. By natural acts of our earth, I mean and include such things as tides, earthquakes, volcanos, and potential resulting tsunamis, which are not weather events, but may effect us.

This forum was created with the concept that we should not clutter the Storm Warnings forum with weather discussion. That forum should remain as a quick reference for sailors needing information about severe weather; perhaps with little time or connection speed via any communications method. At the same Cruiser Log did not have a dedicated forum to discuss weather, and natural acts of earth.

I suggested and volunteered to take on this forum as a self challenge, in preparation to go cruising our oceans, as self-educating, while helping others interested in sailing. I am not a weather expert, but I have read about "The Weather Rock", which goes something like this:

Suspend a rock from a 2 meter / 6 foot tripod. This rock is the perfect weather indicator, it never fails. It is more accurate than your local weather person. This rock is the living word and is 100% correct. This is how it works:

If rock is casting a shadow it is sunny.

If rock is swaying it is windy.

If rock is dry it is dusty.

If rock is wet it is raining.

If rock is white it is snowing.

If rock is shaking there is an earthquake.

If rock is dry, the weather is fair.

If rock is warm, the sun is out.

If rock is not visible, it's dark outside...or your eyes are closed.

If rock is under water, there is a flood.

If rock is gone there is a tornado (Run!!)

Well, the weather rock joke is in fun, but not very practical to the observant, as we do not need a rock to know what is happening around us. Meanwhile we may need the best weather information and prediction we can obtain for our respective Area of Operation (AOP).

In time I will post a variety of topics related to the above; some facts and triva. I ask for your questions, as a challenge to myself. I may or may not know the answer, but will try to find those I do not know, as well invite others that know the answers to post them.

Your input is most welcome. The weather is not always fair, but your questions, experiances, education, or constructive feedback are.

I suspect many that read the Storm Warnings have trouble understanding the jargon; and the resulting meaning, impact, and intent. Fire Away.

Up for this challenge,

Jeff

......I think I am....

WEATHER: What we get.

Hi Jeff, Looks like all hells breaking out in the pacific and off western australia at the moment. What a summer of storms, brazil , queensland floods. Looks like 3 cyclones a week in the pacific at this time! I've never seen it like this before.
