Hello, hoping we can get some advice from those in the know - we are 2 women cycling from London to NZ but need to cross the ocean! We will be in the Singapore area around Feb/March 08 and want to crew on a private vessle going to either OZ or NZ. Will many boats be sailing this route at this time of year? Any info or advice much appreciated, email clairedann@gmail.com cheers

Wow, I am amazed. Cycling from the UK to Oz / NZ. An amazing trip. I once knew a woman who did the Singapore to UK run on a Vespa and I was stunned by that.

Anyway, I can't answer your question but I am sure David, a.k.a. Auzzie, will be along soon and be able to share his vast knowledge of the region with you. Or maybe MNETSEA will get there first. Whichever way it works out, I am sure you will get a god answer to your question.

Best of luck with the remainder of the trip. Write a book about it when it is over and I will buy it.

Cheers // Stephen

No, don't.

Check the weather bulletins. That is the height of cyclone season, and NE Australia is (apparently) due for its worst cyclone season in 20 years. The La Nina effect is in full swing at the moment, I've just done a sail down the east coast from Airlie Beach to Sydney, and the usual prevailing north westerlies were completely absent, and in their place were easterlies and north easterlies. Although this didn't make the sailing significantly less comfortable, I'm glad I got out of the tropics before it did.

All of the marinas north of Keppel Bay are bolting down for the season at the moment, expecting the worst. There have already been two early cyclones, neither were that bad but we are very early in the season at the moment and there is worse to come.

Give it a miss until April at least, or take a plane.
